Boulder School for Autism

Summer 2011

Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado, this school and therapy center provides a healing environment for children with autism. The disorder of the spectrum of Autism varies from person to person, but the communication and relationships involved in the healing process are constant. The design for this school is a reflection of the relationships involved with the disorder-- three volumes of program for children with autism, the families, and therapists, overlap to create the interactive spaces where healing can take place.

The design for the Therapy Classroom springs from the idea of architecture responding to the user, a concept which is integral to the ideal healing environment. The design meets the needs and desires of children with autism by providing design elements (on left) which promote individuality, responsibility, communication, and freedom of choice.
